Why become a transcript typist?

“I just love typing and I really like the flexible hours this job provides” says Jan Gilbert who has worked as a Transcript Typist for private companies over the past 20 years. “I also like listening to court proceedings which to me are never dull” says Jan.

Jan currently works for a leading private transcription company in Melbourne. She started her career as a Legal Secretary but soon found that transcript typing was more interesting and the flexible hours suited her lifestyle.

Transcript Typists listen to court recordings and type them on to a computer. Jan’s work is very varied. One day she can be typing proceedings of a murder trial, the next she can be typing up a civil case.
“I love the variety” says Jan “It keeps me on the edge of my seat”.

When asked what makes a good Transcript Typist, Jan said “They must have fast keyboard skills. They need to type about 80 words per minute with a high level of accuracy. They must also be able to hear well, have an eye for detail and a good understanding of the English language”.

Transcript Typists are currently given in-house training by their employer. Soon they will be able to complete a Business Services Certificate course. ACRIA has developed a specialist training stream for Transcript Typists. For more information contact us on this website.
